Creative minds shape the culture of knowledge at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU). At JGU, more than 35,000 staff and students from over 120 nations take on the challenges of the sciences and the arts, of research, learning, and teaching every single day. It is the joint efforts of all JGU members doing research, studying, working, and living together that make our university so successful. JGU supports its members in all their endeavors – in keeping with the university’s namesake, Johannes Gutenberg, and its motto, “The Gutenberg Spirit: Moving Minds – Crossing Boundaries.”
Our Gutenberg Network brings alumnae and alumni, partners, and friends of JGU together and links them with those currently studying, teaching, researching, and working in Mainz. This creates a vibrant, cross-generational JGU community from which all members can benefit throughout their lives.
JGU supports and accompanies research, teaching, and knowledge transfer across its ten faculties and two schools of arts. This is achieved through 13 central institutions and facilities, eight departments and divisions of the central administration, as well as the staff units of the Executive University Board.
Participation and university autonomy are realized through the central bodies of the university: the University Council, the Senate, and the Executive University Board. Through university-wide and decentralized elections, and via participation in committees, all JGU members are encouraged to contribute to shaping and developing the institution.
The JGU Central Administration regards itself as a service provider. It supports and facilitates the tasks of university employees in connection with research, teaching, and lifelong learning. JGU has defined research focuses, which are regularly reviewed and adjusted. As a comprehensive university with a wide range of disciplines, JGU is able to identify interdisciplinary and innovative core research areas through competitive, quality-oriented processes. These research areas then receive targeted support. The research currently being conducted at JGU is characterized in particular by the following top-level areas:
- Particle and hadron physics with the PRISMA+ Cluster of Excellence
- Materials sciences and quantum technology
- Sustainable chemistry and polymer chemistry
- Life sciences and translational medicine
JGU’s focus on clearly defined fields of research is one of the key factors of its international competitiveness and success. The Gutenberg Research College (GRC), with its executive committee of leading researchers based at JGU and non-university research partner institutes, takes a leading role in determining the university’s research focuses.
JGU is a leader in the field of particle physics. Among other accomplishments, the university’s excellent international standing in this discipline was demonstrated when its research network PRISMA++ (Precision Physics, Fundamental Interactions and Structure of Matter) was recognized as a Cluster of Excellence in the 2025 German Excellence Strategy.
The Rhineland-Palatinate Research Initiative funded by the state’s Ministry of Science and Health supports JGU in the national and international competition for financial support and the recruitment of top-level academics and promising young researchers. The ministry is currently financing 12 joint research projects of JGU with an endowment of up to EUR 9.4 million in total per year. These projects represent the university’s most advanced research fields, alongside other top-level projects and networks such as the PRISMA+ Cluster of Excellence.
JGU’s collaboration with other research institutions and businesses forms a cornerstone of its continuing successful development. It is a member of the Mainz Science Alliance formed together with partners in Mainz and the surrounding area, including the research-led companies BioNTech and Boehringer Ingelheim. Furthermore, JGU Mainz, Goethe University Frankfurt and TU Darmstadt all form the strategic Rhine-Main Universities (RMU) alliance. And since 2019, JGU and eight partner universities from all over Europe collaborate in the FORTHEM European University Alliance funded by the EU.
As an international research hub, JGU is especially committed to promoting cross-border cooperation between nations and cultures. This commitment is enshrined in its mission statement and its strategic concept and finds expression in its strong international relationships and global networks. The international character of the work of its researchers is sustained by a network of some 150 joint projects with partner universities on all continents.
JGU promotes its young researchers and artists by offering a wide range of funding and qualification measures and by providing advice on career goals both within academia and beyond. A comprehensive list of services is available on the website of the Gutenberg Council for Young Researchers (GYR) – the central institution providing support to young academics at JGU.
Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz sees itself as an integral part of society, with which it collaborates closely and trustfully. JGU considers knowledge transfer to be one of its primary objectives. As a university that recognizes its responsibilities towards the general public, JGU undertakes a broad spectrum of transfer activities. These range from conventional forms of technology transfer to a wide range of vocational continuing education courses to numerous concepts designed to promote PUSH (Public Understanding of Science and Humanities). JGU supports open science as a practice encompassing all academic disciplines and aspects of scholarly activities.
Research and Technology Transfer at JGU provides active support to joint projects with businesses and non-academic partners and promotes the exploitation of research findings with the potential for patent protection. This area includes the JGU Startup Center, which is dedicated to advising those interested in founding a business and is a member of the joint Mainz Office of Entrepreneurship (Gründungsbüro Mainz).
The university opens its doors to the public by organizing a wide range of events, aimed in particular at residents in and around Mainz. In addition to its in-house events – such as the Johannes Gutenberg Endowed Professorship, the studium generale, and the prominent lecture series “Physics in the Theater” – and digital media such as the JGU Magazine or the “Minds of Mainz” research podcast, JGU also participates in the annual Mainz Science Market and other public events organized by the Mainz Science Alliance. It is also actively involved in the city’s science communication campaign “Wissen im Herzen.”
Research and Technology Transfer offers comprehensive advisory services to researchers at JGU. It provides support in searching for suitable financing options and start-up funding, and it guides applicants through all phases of the application process and advises on research data management. Research and Technology Transfer assists in drawing up cooperation agreements, provides information on patenting and licensing procedures, handles the preparation of employee invention agreements with respect to intellectual property rights, and serves as a point of contact for those wishing to launch commercial start-ups and spin-offs.
Open Science promotes the accessibility, reproducibility and reutilisation of scientific findings and enables social participation in research.
Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is committed to the idea of Open Access and supports national and international initiatives for free access to scientific knowledge. Its commitment to open science is reflected in many of its measures, such as its open access repository (Gutenberg Open Science), the funding of open access publications and numerous other offers and outreach formats. JGU is also a member of the Verein Nationale Forschungsdateninfrastruktur
JGU cherishes the diversity of its students and endeavors to make them feel comfortable and supported during their studies. The university provides guidance throughout the entire student life cycle with a full range of professional services – from student counseling and application to enrollment and course registration, organizing a semester abroad, and exam registration to graduation and the transition to a professional career. In addition, JGU’s continuing education programs provide many opportunities for lifelong learning.
JGU strives to mold its students into enlightened, responsible global citizens and places considerable emphasis on internationalism and interculturalism in research, learning, and teaching. Active cooperation with partners offering a broad range of joint courses is at the core of JGU’s academic philosophy, achieved through affiliation within the regional Rhine-Main Universities (RMU) alliance as well as international partnerships such as the EU-funded FORTHEM European University Alliance.
JGU places equal emphasis on research and teaching. The teaching strategy and resulting innovative teaching methods and courses have earned the university various prizes and awards – including the German Genius Loci Award for Excellence in Teaching.
JGU seeks to attract the best and brightest minds, thus employing a professional, transparent recruitment and appointment strategy. The university is committed to ensuring diversity and equal opportunities, creating positive prospects and enriching all its members through the promotion and reward of their individual skills and talents. With this clear commitment to a diversity-based university culture, we have created a motivating work environment that fosters job satisfaction and invites our staff to contribute to diversity management at the university.
